Why is Being Happy So Important to our Overall Health?

We all know that being happy means feeling good. But did you know that when we are happy, we are also more productive, nicer towards each other, and – healthier?

We are emotional beings, and both negative and positive emotions are part of human experience. But when we feel positive emotions, such as enjoyment and hope, it’s easier for us to connect with others, and it expands our capacity to cope when things go wrong.

Happiness, really, boils down to making the most of our life. When we are able to handle effectively the inevitably hard times, we can experience the best possible life overall.

Research shows that happy employees are more productive than their less happy peers, and a team at University College London found that people who were happy as young adults end up earning more than their peers. Also, happiness has been associated with improved creativity and better decision-making.

Numerous scientific studies have discovered a connection between psychological and physical wellbeing, specifically a connection between happiness, optimism and life satisfaction, and a lowered risk of cardiovascular disease. While this is not a simple concept, it basically means that a good sense of well-being makes it easier to maintain good habits such as exercising, eating a balanced diet and getting enough sleep.

There are over a hundred studies showing us that happier people have better overall health and live longer, and are half as likely to catch the cold and or experience a heart attack or stroke.

Happier people are also less likely to engage in risky behavior or be involved in problematic situations; for instance, they are more likely to wear seat belts and less likely to end up in road accidents.

And perhaps the most significant difference that the people who are happier make is that they tend to positively contribute to society more – they are more likely to do voluntary work, vote, and participate in public activities, and have a greater respect for law and order and offer more help to others.

What’s more, happiness is contagious – so how happy we are has a measurable impact on the mood of our friends and family, and that has a trickle effect on others, too.

So what can we do to be happier?

One thing we can do to make ourselves feel more positive and happy is to practice mindfulness – being present and in the moment, and staying in inquiry instead of being judgmental.

Other things we can do to be our healthiest and happiest is to keep stress levels to a minimum, get regular checkups and exercise, laugh often, and eat a balanced diet with lots of fruit and veggies. And – indulge in occasional favorite sweets – such as fruit gummies!
